 Transformation begins here.

“The Doctor says that gender dysphoria is not mental illness.”

Kim Green’s Jahn  from Vicissitudes

This is what Jahn tells himself as he admires Morgan’s body from afar, realizing his mounting desire for her. As a man in transition, Jahn must remember these crucial  words spoken by his therapist who desperately needs to restore his sense of sanity in a world that too often dismisses trans people as mentally ill.

The inner conflict and distress that trans people face in feeling disconnected from parts of their body that are not in alignment with their felt gender is legitimate and not a sign of mental illness. Instead, it is a sign of profound connection to one’s soul. The dramatic and miraculous decision to transition is an act of courage and self-affirmation at the deepest level that restores balance and peace. To embrace one’s truth is evidence of sanity, to deny one’s truth is insane. This is true for all of us.

Last week, the coming out of outspoken actor, Elliot Page, reinforces the reality that trans people are highly successful, multi-faceted, clear and highly-evolved human beings. In Page’s announcement, he reflected on his elation as well as the fear of vitriol from those who will judge him.

Vicissitudes is a novel that calls us to explore boundaries that we may not understand and stretch ourselves to legitimize the journeys of others that are unlike our own. We can no longer afford to take comfort in judging the unfamiliar as “crazy.” We must seek to understand as we endeavor to experience the transformative power of love.

In Vicissitudes you will read dissenting voices, not to justify, but to allow space for all perspectives. For readers who may recognize their own fears and penchant for judgement, I hope to offer a safe place within these pages for you to reconsider the power of love that is possible for each of us. To be understood is the freedom to be.

Love transforms,

KG
